Atlanta,
Sept. 18- The United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce commenced
their 22nd annual convention last night, with an inaugural ceremony
held at the Hilton Hotel in Atlanta.
"In
spite of our sorrow, we decided to continue with the Convention,"
said George Herrera, President and CEO of the USHCC, referring
to the terrorist acts that occurred last week in New York and
Washington.
Herrera
mentioned that terrorism will affect the work life of thousands
of people in this country but "we believe the Business Expo
will be as vital to companies looking to fill vacant positions
as to participants that are seeking adequate employment."
Carl
Ware, Executive Vice President of Public Affairs and Administration
at the Coca-Cola Company, indicated his agreement with the decision
by the USHCC to not cancel the convention.
"We
came to this city to commemorate the strength of this country;
its cultural diversity. We can not allow terrorist to shut the
doors of opportunity, and this is one of them," he said.
Ware
announced his companys sponsorship of $150,000 to the United
States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Foundations youth Entrepreneurship
Program, dedicated exclusively to educating youngsters from ages
16 to 24 about the
business world.
"With
Coca-Colas financial assistance, hundreds of Hispanic youth
will be able to have a business in the short run, since it would
be otherwise impossible," Ware said, adding that all of the
proceeds from the golf tournament that started this morning will
go towards this program.
He
also emphasized the importance of the buying power of Hispanics
in Georgia, which is said to be $4 billion dollars, and the growth
in population, which has risen 300 percent in the last ten years.
Jane
Lee Garcia, President of the USHCC Foundation, affirmed that "this
programs role is to create business ability among young
people and cultivate methods of learning for their mercantile
future." This year, as part of the Business Expo at the Georgia
World Congress Center, a BizFest will be held, dedicated to future
entrepreneurs.
"Adults
and youth will participate in seminars, and will exchange ideas
so that they can learn from one another," said Garcia. During
the Inauguration Ceremony, commemorative plaques were given to
honor the support of Carl Ware and Rudy Beserra of Coca-Cola,
Bret Frazier of Mitsubishi Wireless Communications, and Nestor
Fernandez and Juventino Cana, members of the USHCC.(www.atlantalatino.com)
